Why Media Manipulation of Women’s Bodies is a Public Health Problem

Most of us are savvy enough to realize that most of what advertising promises us is a myth. But how dangerous are these lies?

This video appeared over at Upworthy (I discovered it when author AnnaLisa Grant posted it) and provides compelling (and damning) examples of how advertising images of women has gotten worse in the past decade, and why this cultural manipulation affects us all.

Clay, thank you for sharing this! Media manipulation of the “ideal body” has always been an interest for me and in the last year has really become a passion. I’ve watched too many of my beautiful female friends think poorly of themselves because they compare themselves to photoshopped images that we are told are real. I’ve been doing some research about the history of body image in the US, but hadn’t come across this video.
